The dawn of the digital age has transformed the the way the world shares and accesses information. This in turn, however, has had a major effect on scholarly name recognition. With about two thirds of authors sharing a last name and single initial, it has become extremely difficult for scholars to build their research brand.
ORCID (Open Research and Contributor ID) has aimed to solve this problem with unique alphanumeric codes assigned to authors. This unique code identifies authors, and tracks their scholarly contribution with an open and independent registry. An ORCID by any other name has never smelled as sweet.
