Departments that were represented at the this year’s workshop include the Doctoral Degrees Board (DDB), ICTS, the International Academic Programs Office (IAPO), UCT Libraries and the Research Commons, the Postgraduate Centre and Funding Office (PGFO), the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), SRC Postgraduate representative, the Research Contracts and Intellectual Properties Services (RCIPS) and the UCT Writing Centre.

With the semester having come to a close on Friday 27 November, the Writing Centre’s consultations within the Research Commons has also come to an end. Although they are officially closed, the Writing Center will continue running on skeleton staff, with a reduced roster, to provide support for Postgraduate students until Tuesday 15 December. Appointments can be scheduled via their online booking system.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the Writing Centre for providing an invaluable service throughout the year. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership between the Research Commons and the Writing Centre in 2016.

While the year is drawing towards a close, the journey of many a PhD student is just starting to gain momentum as they get accustomed to the way of research. Thursday 3 September saw the commencement of the annual PhD Breakaway, a collaborative program of workshops, seminars and panel discussions aimed at breaching the loneliness of the PhD journey through fostering a sense of community. Amina Adam (Research Commons Librarian) and Theresa Schoeman (Marketing Librarian) from UCT libraries were also in attendance advocating the many services that UCT libraries has to offer to postgraduate students.
